Review: A+ Interactive Math: Family Math Package (TOS Review)

For this review we received a Family Math Package Membership from A+ Interactive Math.

I used this program with my 8.5 year old son.  We started at the 4th grade level.  He has previously covered addition, subtraction and multiplication in another math program.  The other areas in 4th grade math were new to him.

He worked on this program daily, one lesson a day.

What I liked about this program was that it was hands off for me, this freed up time for me to work with other children or work on other things.  Each lesson has an instruction, then an application.  They take the lesson and then apply it.  I also like that they are able to fix answers they get wrong.  This is important to me.  If an answer is wrong, I want them to be able to redo it!  If an questions was missed, an explanation of why is given, and they are able to go back and redo that problem.  If problems were redone, this reflects in the final report for that lesson.

You also have the option to print off worksheets and exams for extra written practice if needed, or if your child just does better writing answers then doing so on the computer.  If an assignment is completed in written form, the parent then needs to go into the program to input the grading information, if you want the program to maintain a grade record.

After each lesson is completed, you need to manually check lesson off as completed in the program, or it will forever say ‘in progress’ on that lesson, even if a grade has been posted.  This can be done from the lesson page or from the admin sign in.

The one thing I would change is that you can manipulate the grades from the student log in.  My son didn’t realize this, so he never messed with it, but I could see him changing his grade if he knew he could.  I really think this should be an admin only feature or require password access.

You can print a grade report for your child, which is helpful if you need to present portfolios for homeschool reporting.

We used a Boogie Board for him to complete the math problems (write them out) before inputting the answers.  This was a great tool for him and saved paper!

The lessons are simple, they are spoken by a family with a semi robotic tone.  She speaks pretty clearly and distinctly.  The lessons also have visuals, to help explain the concepts.

My son enjoyed the lessons and never once complained about having to do math.  I think the fact that the end of lesson problems were only a few helped a ton.  So many times math consists of page after page of math problems.  Since he only had 5-12 problems to complete it made it a lot less overwhelming.  If he ever had to redo a lesson, he did it the next day.

The nice thing about the Family Package is that you can purchase the program for more than one student to use.  You have access to all the grades, so a child who needs more practice can move back to previous grades or if you find the grade is too simple, they can move ahead a grade.  This allows for a lot of flexibility for one price!

They have other choices available, such as CD software, manipulative kit, workbooks, etc.. Placement tests are also available on the website.  There are also lots of freebies!
