Important Information to Know When Pinning to Pinterest

pinterest

Okay, Pinterest has been around for awhile now, but more and more people continue to jump on the bandwagon everyday.

I have to be honest, the most annoying thing I find with Pinterest is clicking on a link only for it to take me to the general blog URL and the post I was hoping for is no where to be found.  Now sometimes you can search the blog and find it, but not always…and that’s a bummer!

How can this be avoided?

You need to know that if a post has a Pinterest button on it’s post (no matter what it looks like)…you FIRST have to click on the blog title to open the specific URL to that post.  THEN you click on the Pinterest icon to pin it.

If you click on a icon while in the general blog, the web address that posts is the general blog URL.  Therefore, if you click on that post later down the road (be it one day or one year) you will be brought to the HOME page of that blog NOT the specific post of interest.

For example, If you wanted to pin THIS post and you got to this post by visiting my main URL address of www.chestnutgroveacademy.blogspot.com, you must FIRST click on the title Important Information to Know When Pinning to Pinterest, this will change the URL in your address bar to http://chestnutgroveacademy.blogspot.com/2014/06/important-information-to-know-when.html which is the specific URL to THIS post.  THEN click the red button with the P on it at the bottom of the post.  This way anyone who clicks on your pin will be brought directly to this post!

Hope that makes sense!  This way there will be no clicks of awesome pins only to not be able to find the awesome thing we were looking for!

IF you happen to find a pin that is not properly linked, you can edit the URL after you repin it.  Scroll over the picture of the pin and click on the pencil icon in the top right corner

Then cut and paste (or type in) the correct URL where it says SOURCE and SAVE CHANGES

Screenshot 2014-06-19 17.26.23

Now it’s fixed and everyone that repins it will have the correct URL as well!

Happy Pinning!

Dyeing Rice–Pin Do It!

When  I taught preschool we would dye rice and pasta all the time with liquid watercolors, I LOVED that stuff.  But it never occurred to me that you could dye them with food coloring as well!  My kids have been deprived and playing with plain old boring pasta and rice…until NOW!

002
and this is JUST the beginning!

I had this activity pinned HERE, from this website

I will say though that I found it did not need as much coloring or alcohol as what the recipe on the site calls for.  As I was starting I realized I did not have 2T of food coloring, so I decided to half the recipe and only use 2 c of rice.  But after adding a little less than 1T of color and about 2T of alcohol, I added 1c more of rice, and than another.  And it was plenty colored!  The second batch, I didn’t measure the food coloring, I just added it  until it was the color I wanted.  We used the neon food coloring!

So My recipe is:

4c rice
food coloring (eyeball it)
2T Rubbing Alcohol

It dried really quick, in about an hour – I just spread it out on wax paper on the countertop!

WARNING:  This does stain your skin before it dries…even though I washed my hands numerous times, it finally came off when I washed my hair in the shower.

I have plans to do some more rice and some pasta too!

Getting Crafty–Making Baby Gifts!

Knowing that I would have to make some baby gifts soon, I started pinning some ideas for gifts to make, and I finally took the time to make them over Labor Day Weekend (though I’m not done, I have a few more to make)

Stenciled Onesie - This is a freezer stenciled onesie with a hula skirt….now this idea itself was not pinned, but I made a spin off of a tutu onesie, and combined it with a hula tutorial I had pinned.  This is the result – my hula onesie!  (This is not my first time doing freezer paper stencils)  The shirt on the right is the shaka sign (it’s Hawaiian for ‘hang loose’) and was also made from a freezer paper stencil.  Both stencils were cut on my cricut machine using Life’s a Beach cartridge.  Stenciled onesie pinned HERE from this website, The hula skirt pinned HERE from this website, and the original idea of a tutu onesie was pinned HERE from this website.

Lightweight Baby Blankets - I pinned these from Martha Stewart.  The flannel was purchased from the remnant bin many months ago, just waiting for someone to have a baby girl!  I bought the solid cotton fabric specific for the project.  Pinned HERE from this website

Baby Crinkle Square - This fabric was from the remnant bin too, and the ribbons were scraps from my scrapbooking supplies.  Pinned HERE from this website.

Baby Burp Cloths - The fabric on these diapers was also from the remnant bin, the diapers were from my cloth diaper stash…I had way to many and put a bunch aside to use for projects like these!

Homemade Laundry Detergent

So I have been planning on making my own detergent for some time, I kept saying “once I run out”, well that time came, and I was so worried it was going to be such a chore (I had already purchased the stuff, it was just the process that worried me).  Let me say, it was super easy!

I debated whether or not to blog about it, since I have seen it on several blogs just this week, but with this new “pin do it’ blog hop I found, I was proud that I did something I pinned…I just had to share!

Here is the pin on my board

It originated at this blog, but I recognized the recipe to be that of The Duggar’s, that my friends have raved about for some time now.

So here is what you need:
001
I purchased all 3 at Long’s Drug Store (here in Hawaii), you can also use Ivory, Sunlight, Kirk's Hardwater Castile or Zote bars instead of Fels-Naptha.

I broke the Fels-Naptha bar into a few chunks (actually I cut it with a knife) and put it into my vita-mix dry container (you could also use a food processor or grate it by hand with a grater).
002
After it was all broken up, I mixed it in a bowl with the other ingredients.

003
I then put it in a snap ware container, with a Tablespoon, and labeled it! (yes, I’m a label geek)

I washed my first load of laundry with it, using only 1 scoop, and it came out smelling so nice and it looked just as clean as with my store bought detergents!

Now I can check that off my “things to do/try” list!

I may try Ivory next time since you can buy that in bulk at Costco!  I did not make note of the prices, but I KNOW it’s cheaper (especially here in Hawaii).  I’ll have to come back and update with prices later!
