First Grade–Week 29–Ancient India

We are WAY behind with Lego Club, but this was April’s project – a playground!  We just got around to doing it this week.  Lego Club is FREE through Currclick.com, you can use what Lego’s you have, order some from online sites (at a cost) or order a complete kit from the Club Leader.  We do a little of both, just depends on my mood.

We are also behind in opening our Little Passport packages, so I pulled out India this week….since we were studying Ancient India.

For Art we used Home Art Studio First Grade and did the lesson on peacocks, since peacocks live in India.

We also listened to Story of the World, read a story from India and read about the People of India (using the books pictured below)

For Science we are still doing the Moving Beyond the Page review, and enjoying it…more to come the end of the month.
For the most part we are doing light loads over the summer, our weeks are jammed pack with Swimming Lessons, Field Trips, Science Class, Art Camps, Pool/Beach Trips, Gymnastics, etc…

First Grade (week 17)

We had a rather short week, only 2 actual school days. With a field trip, co-op and a sick day.  So, we'll have to finish up what else we had planned at the beginning of the upcoming week.

Lego Club - this month they have a lesson a day, like a lego club advent.

Our ornaments this week - we learned about the history and symbolism of candy canes and poinsettias!

He also did a writing words game from 3Dinosaurs.com House for Hermit Crab printables, I hung words from the book around the house, and he went around with a clipboard and matched the word with pictures ad wrote them.

He read:
Picture of Story of Hanukkah YR1
For science we studied crustaceans - more on that on Tuesday's Out in Nature post.

We watched:
Living Scriptures - Joseph in EgyptJoseph's Reunion and Moses  all of which coincided with our History Lessons.

We also attended a live Nativity Scene and did some caroling, and went looking at Christmas lights as part of our Christmas lessons, but I didn't get any good pictures (since it was night time).

Lego Club at CurrClick

My 6yo LOVES Legos!! The other day I stumbled upon a lego club advertisement in a CurrClick email I received.....so I looked into it more...and guess what??? It's FREE!!! So of course, I signed him up!!!

It was a little confusing and overwhelming at first, but it didn't take me long to figure it all out. The same class is held every Monday, you need only attend one....and if you can't attend any, have no fear, each class is recorded and available for you to watch at your leisure. When you join you also have access to the archives, which are fun to look through; last week we did a build from the archives because it went with our theme. We have found we prefer watching the recordings because we can pause and rewind when needed. Plus my 6yo isn't old enough to participate in the online chat associated with the live class.

A list of Legos needed for the build is provided several weeks ahead of time. For me the most difficult part was sorting through my sons Legos to find what we needed.....but I solved that with a tackle box. I then sorted all his Legos out by size....when I got the next list, finding the pieces was a breeze!! (Now if only it would stay that organized!).

Don't have all the Legos listed?? There are two fairly easy options....the instructor just started offering full kits for sale, save time digging and just buy them altogether (and color coordinated!), or you can buy individual pieces through bricklink.com. They are fairly reasonably priced, and shipping is only a couple of dollars.

This month (October) the build was a tree.....each club meeting has an educational presentation in relation to the build and then the instruction portion. She allows time for show-n-tell as well (you just need to notify her in advance).

My son really looks forward to club, although he has only been to two thus far. We already have his Legos set aside for next month!!

Here he is at club building his tree

The builds he has made so far

If you have a Lego lover, definitely check this out!

Other free clubs available are American Girl, Magic Tree House and Chess Club!!
