This has been a work in progress, I first learned about the alphabet box from Counting Coconuts Blog
Post, and started collecting little trinkets to use in my own. I found the box with drawers at Wal-Mart, and went from there. I have collected the trinkets a variety of ways, sales, yard sales, around the house, etc. I also took a suggestion from another blog and bought a trinket grab bag from
HighPie on etsy for about $5. (This was sort of a gamble, as I was only able to use maybe half of what I received, but she has a wide variety of trinket items, and some you can by specifically and know what you are getting). I am still in need of a few things for a few letters, but for the most part, it’s complete and ready to start using!
I stamped the letters on the front in blue/red to coordinate with the Montessori Moveable Alphabet. I also purchased a
Moveable Alphabet Kit from The Montessori Print Shop, which I will laminate and place in each box. This kit also includes some pictures, so it will also help supplement my collection (but I like to have as many 3D objects as I can find, with a minimum of 3!).
So here is what I have in each box -

A – airplane, anchor, ant, apple

B – balloon, button, baseball, bat, beetle, butterfly

C – cherries, crab, cap, chick, candy cane, carrot

D – drink, dime, dinosaur, doughnut, dolphin

E – Eskimo, elephant, egg, egg

F – fairy, French fries, flag, fly, fork, flower, fish

G –guitar, giraffe, glasses, globe, gift

H – hula, helicopter, hand, hamburger, hat, horn

I – igloo, ice cream, iguana

J – jack, jewel

K – key, kettle, knife

L – leaf, lion, ladybug, light, lemon, lizard

M – mitt, mallet, money, motorcycle

N – nine, nickel (not pictured – nail, nut)

O – ostrich, ornament, orca, octopus

P – Penguin, pliers, peppermint, penny, poinsettia, pear, pumpkin

Q - quarter

R – rabbit, rhino, ray, reindeer, ribbon, racquet

S – spider, sleigh, seal, strawberry, slipper(sandal), shell, saxophone, snake, sneakers (shoe)

T – tiki, trumpet, toothpaste, turtle, train

U – Umbrella, unicorn

V - van

W – whale, walrus, watermelon, wolves

X – fox

Y – yo-yo, yarn, yellow

Z – zipper, zero, zebra
We have these tactile letters, they are made on a thick paper, so they are not as sturdy at the wooden sand paper letters, but very functional, and affordable for home use. We also have the Trixie and Troy Letter Trace, but I’m not as fond of these ones.

Cool thanks for the link to the Etsy shop! I have a lot of trinkets for my alphabet box, but a few letters are a bit short. I wish it was possible to get words that started with "x", but like you, am having to resort to words that end with "x" instead. A thorough search of the dictionary taught me that words that start with "x" have a "z" sound instead (maybe everybody, but me knew that) and usually aren't words my daughter would understand anyway.
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to put together an Alphabet box, but I always forget to look for the actual box at the store! I love all your ideas. Another option for Q might be to make a miniature quilt with fabric scraps.
ReplyDeleteyou may want to look at what you wrote for the C box. I had to read it twice! very fun idea though, as long as you can keep all the pieces in their correct box!
ReplyDeleteJust stopping by from Montessori Monday! What a great collection of items for your alphabet box! I should start collecting items now, so when my tot is ready I'll have full box!

What a neat idea! Thanks for showing everything you've put in the boxes, I'm sure it will get everyone's brains going for their own boxes! And thanks for linking up to NOBH :)
