A fun winter experiment….why do they put salt on the roads when it snows??
Freeze several small containers to make several ice blocks of the same size…ice cubes would work fine.
Dye salt with food coloring in several shaker containers (old spice jars).
Put the ice in a dish (don’t forget a control on the side; ice in a dish that you DO NOT put salt on). Let the kids go to town sprinkling the colored salt on the ice.
Compare how quickly the salted ice melts compared to the non-salted ice.
We did this for a co-op science activity and the kids had a blast!
