Today we took Math outside, b/c we needed the space. We took our tape measure and some chalk to find out exactly HOW BIG WAS A DINOSAUR?
We measured out 39ft the length of a T-Rex, and C and Z each stood at one end of the line, about as long as a bus.
Then we measured how many C’s that was, answer: 10.5
Then we measured even further to see how big a Supersaurus was – 140ft, and it took us 62 mommy steps from one side to the other…and he was not even the biggest dinosaur!
We had a lot of fun with this activity, and it really helped put into perspective just how big dinosaurs were.
Check out my Giveaway for a great book to go along with this activity!
That is a great activity. We did something similar last year with a relative distance between the Earth and the Moon and the Earth and the Sun. It helped Anna understand how much farther the Sun really is.
ReplyDeleteOh I love this!!! We will add this into our week this week. We are studying dinosaurs right now as well and his favorite is the T- rex. :) Thanks for sharing this wonderful idea!!
ReplyDeleteI found you on the blog hop and now follow you via google friend!

And you didn't get the "What are we going to use math for, anyways?" discussion! Brilliant lesson on so many levels!
ReplyDeleteGreat way to put it in perspective. Thanks for linking up to the NOBH.
ReplyDeleteOne time last year during our ocean studies, we measured the sizes of whales and compared them outside using yarn. The kids loved it and I'm sure your kids were amazed at the size of dinos. Great lesson! :) Thanks for linking up to NOBH!
