Review: HomeSchool Scholastics–WAY Comes Home (TOS Review) #hsreviews #WAYComesHome #HomeschoolNutrition #HomeschoolHealth

Way comes home review

We received the WAY Comes Home Kit from HomeSchool Scholastics, an i4 Learning Company to use for this review.

WAY stands for Wellness, Academics and You and WAY Comes Homes is a family based health curriculum.  It is designed to work with a family of multiple ages (mainly K-5/6).  The kit includes all that you need for 3 kids, one in each grade level (K/1, 2/3 and 4/5/6).  These materials include:  Stock cards for activities, a journal for each level, DVD, teacher manual, 3 baskets, 2 foam balls, ink pad, glitter, balance scale, tape measure, plastic eggs, My Plate packet, stethoscope, and eye chart.

WAY-CH-Still-12_zpsfblerthh

I have to be honest and say when the box first arrived, I was a bit overwhelmed.  Trying to figure out when do what with which items, was overwhelming.  However, the teacher book is laid out fairly well, and as soon as I sat down and took the time to actually READ over it, it became a lot easier.

2016-08-01 11.54.21-1

There is a module for each grade set, and then optional activities for the other grade sets.  We decided the easiest way to do it and cover all the material was to a module for each grade set on separate days, with the optional activities for the other grade sets along with it.  This is because I have 3 children in the age brackets, and they each fall into one of the grade sets.

The modules are labeled ending in .1 for the Health Safari or K/1 grade, .2 for WAY Me Mysteries or 2/3 grade and .3 for Innerspace Adventures or 4/5/6 grade.

So on Day 1 we did Activity 1.1, with the additional activities for WAY Me Mysteries and Innerspace Adventures.

Day 2 we did Activity 1.2 with the additional activities for Health Safari and Innerspace Adventures

Day 3 we did Activity 1.3 with the additional activities for Health Safari and WAY Me Mysteries.

The Day 4 would start Activity 2.1 and so on….

Hopefully that makes sense.  It really can be done any way you see fit for your family, but this seemed to work for us.

WAY-CH-Still-14_zps1uwetnd7

My younger kiddos preferred the DVD lesson and the hands on activities over any of the journal work.  My oldest didn’t care much for the journal lessons either, but I have all boys, and they don’t like to write!  EVER!   There are a lot of hands on activities though, and my almost 3 year old liked to join in as well.  So it was fun for the whole family!

I gained a lot of insight into my 10 year old through some rubrics he filled out in his journal, which was a great activity for me to see what he thinks about himself.

I know a lot of homeschoolers in the groups I am in that are always looking for health curriculums… this is a great one!  It requires little (if any) prep, it can be done as a family and there is something for everyone, on every level.

The curriculum comes at a reasonable price too!  Currently it’s on sale for $39.95.  You can purchase additional workbooks, and card packs (if needed).

I feel this is a really well rounded health program, it talks about taking care of our selves, not only physically, but incorporates some mental health in there (particularly for the older kids). It incorporates other subjects as well, such as writing and PE.

If you have a mixed age family and want a one size fits all health curriculum, this could be the one for you!

UPDATED 9/8: The cost has lowered to $29.95 (no coupon code required) and free shipping!!

Review: Devonian: GREEMU (TOS Review) @korunaturals #naturalbodycare #greemuoil #vegan

Greemu Review

For this review I used GREEMU by Devonian, distributed by Koru Naturals.  We have reviewed for Koru Naturals before, one of which was for Emu Oil.  Greemu is the vegan, animal friendly alternative to Emu Oil, and I was ever bit as impressed with it!

GREEMU6_zpsdqjjspf2

I loved GREEMU just as much as I did Emu Oil, but even more so because it was plant based instead of animal based.  (I have to admit the idea of Emu Oil was slightly disturbing to me, but it worked so great that I put that in the back of my mind!).

I used GREEMU in all the same ways I used Emu Oil, and it was just as effective!  Unfortunately, I still have difficulty getting it on my back; can we get this in a spray or something??!!

It has been great for my dry skin, both hands, face, back, feet… you name it.  It absorbs well and does not leave any greasy residue.  It didn’t cause me to break out or anything like that either, which is always a concern for me when using moisturizers on my face.   Even though it doesn’t leave a greasy residue, it goes on thick and is long lasting!  It’s been great for my cuticles and used it in manicures.  It really is an all-purpose moisturizer!

The website mentions that this is a slower absorbing formula than EMU oil and suggests you use less and apply more if needed.  I used about nickel size for my hands and elbows.  I no longer have the emu oil (I used most of it and past what was left onto a friend to use with her son who had severe eczema), so I couldn’t compare them side by side.

It also mentions using it for dry hair treatment… I DID NOT try this in my hair, but wanted to mention that it’s a possibility.

I have a lot more dry skin issues in the summer than I do currently, but this will definitely be my go to, especially for those wind chapped cheeks of my little ones, come next winter!

Put some in some bath water for an all over body absorption (if I had a decent tub!).

It really does not have any kind of odor (that I noticed), so no unpleasant smell.  It can be used as a carrier oil for essential oils too!   Such a great way to add a pleasant smell, have some healing (depending on the oil) and be moisturized!

This oil should not be used if you are allergic to plant oils!

It is $10.80 for a 4oz bottle (which is almost $8 cheaper than the EMU oil too, BONUS!)

I noticed that it is on sale right now:

Get 20% off until May 31st by entering coupon code GN395Z10

There is an EMU oil promotion running as well, see their website for more details.  They offer FREE SHIPPING on orders of $35 or more.  Need suggestions for other items to order?  Check my Koru Naturals reviews!  We have loved everything we have tried from them thus far!

I would equally recommend Emu oil or GREEMU, however, if you are looking for a less expensive and vegan option, it’s GREEMU ALL THE WAY!

I don’t have any pictures to show this review, because, honestly I didn’t have any dramatic effects (no big skin issues I was trying to solve), so all I can say is it helped keep my skin in great condition and didn’t cause any issues in using it!

Stop Using Food as Rewards (They are Kids, Not Dogs!)

STOP Food as Rewards

This has really been bugging me lately, and I have been thinking this blog post out in my head for some time now.  I’m not sure how to best relay my thoughts on the matter, but I really feel like something needs to be said!

Maybe it’s bothering me more as I have been struggling as we go through an ADHD diagnosis process with one of my children, but when did it become a ‘thing’ to reward kids with food?!?  And UNHEALTHY food at that?  When did a sticker or a high five become NOT GOOD ENOUGH that we have to give them a ‘treat’ each time they succeed at something?

As a mother, who is trying to instill healthy eating habits in her children, I sometimes feel as if the world is against me!  Being a homeschooling mom, this was something that I thought would be easy to avoid.  After all, my children are with me the majority of the time.  However, I am finding it everywhere we go:  Church, Co-op, Music Class, Cub Scouts… it’s never ending!  They all consider it just one small treat, yet those small treats all add up to LOTS of small treats over a week!

Obesity is an epidemic in The United States.  The statistics are alarming:

Yet, we continue to instill unhealthy eating habits in our children.  Food as rewards is just ONE of many unhealthy habits we are teaching.

I don’t expect my kids to NEVER eat junk food, I mean I believe everything in moderation.  However, I feel that we are instilling an unhealthy relationship with food in our children.  Why should every job well done be rewarded with [junk] food?

How many of us as adults, go to junk when we are feeling down or blue?  Why is that?  Think about it, seriously, think about it!  What are we telling our kids we use food as a reward, as a feel good, pat on the back method?

Then there is the problem of ADHD in general.  A large portion of kids in school today are diagnosed with ADHD, and I don’t believe that all of them deserve that diagnosis.

I’m not denying that ADHD exists, I’m dealing with it now in my own child.  HOWEVER, how many of these cases are food related?  Have you seen the FREE breakfasts they give to lower income kids in school?  Many schools have started to restrict the giving of food in class because of food allergies, but the food they serve at school, alone, is enough to make kids not be able to sit in their seats!  Additionally, not every school has this practice.

How many holiday parties are had?  How much junk is eaten at them?  Let’s take Valentines Day for example (since this was the most recent holiday).  We had a party at co-op, TONS of baked goods and other sweets at the party, many kids gave Valentines with sweet treats attached.  Then Sunday at church, the kids were given FUN DIP, along with other sweet treats from their teachers.  I had other adults, who love my children, give candy to them as well.  Just take a look at the ingredients in FUN DIP:
Dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup solidas, and less than 2% of citric acid, magnesium stearate, artificial flavors, blue 1, blue 1 lake, blue 2, blue 2 lake, red 40, red 40 lake, yellow 5, yellow 5 lake, yellow 6, yellow 6 lake.

I cringe at the site!  UGH!  Sugar, Sugar, Sugar, artificial flavors and artificial colors….

This is why food decisions should be left to the parent, I mean, obviously some people don’t have an issue with these ingredients.  But, I do!  That same week they received a reward in Piano that was a FULL SIZE candy bar! (My kids had never had a full sized candy bar in their lifetime, call me a bad mom!).  Now I’m stuck with the dilemma of having to confront the individuals (I always do kindly), bite my tongue or tell my children that next time they have to just say “No, Thank you”.  Neither of which are comfortable or fun situations to be in.

I’ve brought my concerns up with people in the past, I’ve agreed that occasional treats are okay (previously, they were throwing a candy at my kid each time they answered a question, or sat still, or whatever).  So, don’t get me WRONG, I am HAPPY that they have cut back, things are better.  At the same time, I don’t understand why this even has to be an issue?

We don’t train kids with treats, they aren’t DOGS!

Maybe I’m jealous, when all these people give my kids sweet treats, I become the bad guy to them.  We like to have occasional sweet treats at home, but with the large number they are given out side of the home we have had to limit them even more at home.  The problem is, that I have more control about what we eat at home.  Even though we have sweet treats, they are ‘healthier’ sweet treats than what they are getting outside of the home.  They are also limited and NEVER used as a reward!

I understand working towards a larger reward, I mean I used a sticker chart when potty training my oldest, and after so many stickers he picked a prize (a toy train).  Though still, why does the big reward have to be food (and again always unhealthy food)?

What is the best way to handle this dilemma?  I don’t want to offend people, but I really don’t want them giving candy (or any food for that matter) to my children. More importantly, I do NOT want them receiving food as a reward!

Have you been faced with this?  I honestly never thought this would be an issue since we homeschool and eat mostly at home.  But it seems every where we go they are giving unhealthy food to my kids!  I understand a small bit of what allergy moms go through now, except since my kids aren’t allergic…I’m just the pain in the butt mom that ruins everyone's fun!

I think as a whole, people in this country are grossly undereducated about what is in our food and how it can affect us.  Ever put bad gas in your car?  It doesn’t run really well, does it?  The same goes for food and our bodies.  I don’t consider myself a health food nut, I really don’t (that form of extremism is not healthy either), but I do want my kids to have good food.  Additionally, I’m the one who has to suffer the consequences of the food these people give my children when we get home!  I want to enjoy my kids, it’s hard to do when they are climbing the walls, having emotional breakdowns, fighting, etc…  as a result of the poor food choices of other people.

Le Sigh!

I guess the problem also falls on where to draw the line?  As I write this I am planning a geography lesson for Co-op on Brazil and I planned to make some Brazilian sweets for the lesson.  It’s hard to break that cycle, so I get it.  It’s the food gifts and rewards that bother me the most though.  Overall, however, we could all stand to make better food choices!

The USDA points out that using food as rewards results in the following consequences:

*  Contributes to poor health
*  Encourages overconsumption of unhealthy foods
*  Contributes to poor eating habits
*  Increases preference for sweets

Therefore, as I finish my vent, I pledge to do a better job myself.  When food is offered in my classes (for learning purposes only) I will make more conscience and healthy choices, as if I were feeding myself or my family!

I’ve already planned to make a Paleo version of Brigadeiros for our Brazil lesson and some Paleo muffins for my other class.  This will also gave me a trip to the grocery store for ingredients!  WIN-WIN!

Now, if you choose to reward with food in your own home, that’s your choice.  The point of this post is that it shouldn’t be done with other peoples children.

Need ideas for NON FOOD rewards and gifts, here are a few to try:

Stickers
Tickets or Tokens (to cash in for other prizes)
Pencils, Pens, erasers or other school or art supplies
Media time
One on one time
Books (Reading, coloring, activity)
High Five or Hug (when appropriate)
Certificate, ribbon or small trophy
Verbal Recognition
Book Marks
Craft kits
Little Toys
Coupons
Money (reasonable amount)
Movie Night
Playdate with friend
Child’s choice of music, game, etc..

I know not everyone's idea of ‘healthy’ is exactly the same, but I think most can agree that candy is NOT healthy.  I just finished watching That Sugar Film (FREE on Amazon Prime Streaming) and it reinforced a lot of what I have learned doing the Whole30.  Recently (within the last year) the WHO changed its recommendations
for daily sugar consumption to 6 to 12 teaspoons a day.  4.2 grams of sugar equals one teaspoon, and one can of soda contains about 10 teaspoons!

I highly recommend the film, it was very eye opening, and to be honest it’s the FIRST food documentary I have watched, I’m not one that generally watches things of that nature. (Though now I may watch more). The thing I found most interesting about the film was that it took place primarily in Australia.  We lived in New Zealand (comparable) for 4 months (about 6 years ago) and went through SUGAR withdrawals while there.  Their food is no where near as sweet as it is here in the USA, yet over consumption of sugar is still a problem there…how much more of a problem does that make it here then?

Another great one to watch is Fed Up available on Netflix!

One can easily say sugar in moderation is okay, however, when everyone is handing out sugary treats, moderation goes OUT THE WINDOW!   Never mind the fact that SUGAR is in almost EVERYTHING!  If it’s not sugar, it’s some form of sugar or artificial sweetener (which has the same effect on your brain).

DISCLAIMER:  I want to point out that I DO NOT consider myself an expert or perfect by any means.  This is something that I have to make a conscience effort on every day of my life!  It is something that has come into play more recently, I do not expect everyone to share my beliefs on health food.  The thing I am most frustrated with is the giving of food as rewards/gifts.  This post is not intended to offend anyone, it’s just me thinking out loud and honestly looking for suggestions on how to handle the issue.  I can’t be the ONLY parent frustrated by this (or am I?  I certainly hope not!).

30 Days on the Whole 30–My Story

whole 30
I have mentioned a few times in my weekly wrap ups (and a lot on my Instagram and Twitter) that I have been doing the Whole 30.
If you have not heard of the Whole 30 you can get an overview here.  However, to sum it up:
whole30_no(No Beans includes peas, peanuts and soy)
FOR 30 DAYS!!
I NEVER in a million years thought I would do something like this!  I’ve been feeling drawn to a Gluten Free diet for sometime now, but have been pushing it aside.  When people would talk about food based documentaries and go on about food, I would plug my ears!  I LOVED food, I didn’t want to ruin it! I knew bread messed with me, but I didn’t want to give it up!  I have suffered with medical  issues for years (Diagnosed Lupus about 11 years ago, though that was retracted about 3 years ago…back to square one, not sure what’s wrong with me!).  I had been noticing some hormonal changes, as well as an uncontrollable temper lately too.  After lots of prayer, I felt it important to look VERY closely at my DIET!  After all, a car with bad fuel doesn’t run well at all, right?  Neither do we!
clean-eating-meme-slide-e1422576508182
I began to research Gluten Free versus Paleo, and found out about Whole 30!  I pretty much cut grains and dairy from my diet immediately, and noticed a difference right away!  I also noticed a huge difference when I did eat them after not eating them often (not a good difference!).
I spent about a month (or more) researching and reading up on Whole 30.  I started to stock my pantry with Whole 30 compliant items a few days before my projected start date.  I felt prepared!  I think these are the MOST IMPORTANT key to success on the WHOLE 30!  Education and Preparation!

^^THE BEST PLACE TO START^^

Reading labels was a very eye opening experience for me!  I have come to learn that there is basically SUGAR in EVERYTHING!  Things you wouldn’t even expect sugar to me in (like meat) there is SUGAR!  It’s crazy!!!  I mean, I’m pretty sure that’s the answer to our obesity epidemic!  HELLO!!??
After one shopping trip of reading A LOT of labels and putting A LOT of things back, I learned what was compliant and what wasn’t, and each shopping trip thereafter was a bit easier.  I still label read new products once in a while, but for the most part I now know what to buy and what NOT TO BUY!  Shopping is much easier!  I’ll be honest, I didn’t buy the highest quality of meat (which is a recommendation, grass-fed, free pasture, etc…); it was too pricey for my family of 6.  I did stay within the RULES though, and for the most part my family ate what I age (for dinner at least).
I ordered some items on line, you can make your own mayo and dressings, but for me I knew I would not get around to it and that would be my stumbling block!  So I ordered from Tessame’s (receive 20% off with my link), LOVE their Whole30 starter pack!  I just reordered a few of the dressing from it that I have used up!  I also ordered a few things from Thrive Market on a free trial membership, I didn’t find enough there to justify the yearly fee (for me, however).
I have a Whole 30 Pinterest board where I have pinned a lot of the information I found helpful, yummy recipes and more!
If you follow my Instagram you can see my daily meals!
I honestly don’t feel myself missing any of the old food….I have NEVER eaten this good!  I kid you not!  Everything has been so delicious and enjoyable.  I really am appreciating food more than ever!
As part of educating myself, I found it helpful to also understand the stages that one goes through during the 30 days.  It’s a rocky road in the beginning, sugar withdrawal, grouchiness, headaches, etc..  Be aware that these will occur, don’t let it discourage you.  It’s a whole new ball game around day 19 or so (maybe even sooner!).
This Facebook group has been great too!  Every once in a while I felt like I needed reassuring about something, or I just had a question.  They are great!  Be warned they are strict and they follow rules and recommendations!  But it’s a great knowledge base and motivation factor!
keep-calm-header-360x330
How’d it work for me?
I wasn’t looking for weight loss here.  Heck, if I loose weight, I’ll need to buy new clothes, and I have just recently purchased a ton…not wanting to do that!  But I just weighed myself this morning and I lost 11 lbs.  (I actually shed a couple pounds before I started, by just cutting grains and dairy, but I didn’t weigh myself before Day 1).  So I went from 138 to 127.  I had to go into my Stitch Fix profile and change my sizes!  My current clothes still fit, but are a little baggy.  I had to put a belt on the other day!
So NSVs (Non Scale Victories) for me are:
*Lost that tummy bloat
*Less tired all the time/More energy
*More patience
*Slower to anger/get frustrated
*Sleeping better (when undisturbed, I still have kids!)
*I feel full (no snacking!)
*No sugar/chocolate cravings
*Don’t miss the ‘old’ food
*Not as many aches/pains
ENERGY??!! – I just wanted to give an example of how my energy has increased.  Typically I’m DONE by lunch…grumpy, tired, don’t feel like doing anything!  Co-op days are very draining!  But, last week for co-op….we hit Costco afterwards, I came home unloaded the car, put the groceries away, made dinner (yummy pork chops), did the dishes, washed, dried and folded several loads of laundry and didn’t go to bed until 1030!  I felt great!
Where am I going from here?
I have decided to stay Paleo, at least 80% of the time (most likely more).  I am looking into a Emeals subscription for their Paleo menus. I tried out one of their recipes for dinner and it was good!  Even the kids ate it up!
12066019_10153419069404335_7942739226525675994_n
Herbed Salmon Burger and Broccoli Slaw from their FREE menu under Paleo (1 of 3 Paleo recipes available for FREE)
I am looking forward to experimenting with baking Paleo treats!  There are so many yummy Paleo desserts (I have a pinterest board for that!) But I have NO DESIRE to go back to my old way of eating.
For the kids, I have switched them to mostly Gluten Free….for convenience purposes, I haven’t switched them completely.  But I know only buy Gluten Free cereals (Cheerios, Chex, Kix, etc…) and Gluten Free snack foods, but they still get sandwiches (Gluten Free bread is $$$$).  I’ve noticed a HUGE difference in their behavior (especially my oldest who exhibited ADD behaviors).
The thing I have learned most of all though is LABEL READING!  Previously looking at a label was overwhelming; I didn’t even know what I was looking for, what was good, what was bad, etc…  Now I have a better idea of what to look for. We are eating more fresh over all, and I am a lot more picky about packaged foods.  I also discovered that my regular grocery store carries quite a bit of compliant foods!  SCORE!
My next goal is to use all this new found energy and get motivated to exercise!  I started out the new year doing fairly well, but it fizzled.  I am so out of shape, and feel now that my body has the RIGHT FUEL, I need to get into shape!  I started this on Day 28 and am going well!  I finally feel like the exercise is energizing me and helping, as opposed to just taking what little (if any) energy I had left (Pre Whole 30).
I’m looking forward to continuing my journey!

Weight Loss Wednesday

scale

To go with my word for 2015 (Health), I’ve decided to link up to Weight Loss Wednesday.  As a way to keep myself accountable and to maybe help motivate others!

I don’t want to make this so much about weight loss though.  For me it’s not about that, it’s about being HEATHY!

My goals are:

1.  Watch what I eat – cut out the junk, eat healthy!  Have 3 small meals during the day.

2.  Detox – I’m doing a 10 day digestion detox currently.  This will be followed up with probiotics.  This detox is from dOTERRA. {GX Assist Soft Gel (35040001) and GX Assist Soft Gel (35040001)}

3.  Exercise – I am SOOOO out of shape.  It’s bad!  I want to make it to the gym 2 nights a week (or more if possible), and work out at home my other days.  I’m focusing at this point mostly on cardio.  I would like to tone, but that’s not my priority right now.

My plan:

1.  I plan to start my day with a dOTERRA protein shake, small snack before lunch (yogurt), small healthy lunch with fruits, small afternoon snack (nuts), and a small dinner. {Chocolate Trim Shake (35200001) and Vanilla Trim Shake (35180001)}

2. I will be taking a probiotic following my cleanse, drinking two water bottles of water a day (min.) with lemon or lime EO and taking a Slim N’ Sassy EO supplement. {Slim & Sassy Softgels (34270001)}

3.  Attending Deep H20 exercise class on Monday and Friday evening.  Tuesday’s doing Family Fitness with the kids and other evenings biking on a stationary bike (I just bought used online and will receive on Saturday) while watching a TV show for about 40-45min. Friends is on Netflix!!  Woot! Woot!

My Ultimate Goal is to build healthy habits!

My progress so far:

Attending H20 class on Monday 1/5
Eating better, no binge junk food…though I have had a cookie or two since Saturday.  I’m eating better and am not having that lunch time crash I’ve been noticing!  Yeah!
