Our Curriculum: H is for History

So we decided this year to do Early American History since we will be relocating to Maryland just after the new year, there are so many great historical sites on the east coast.  I wanted to be able to take full advantage of being out east, we aren’t sure how long we will be there.

I discovered this great Charlotte Mason based History program that I’m really excited about starting.  It’s called Beautiful Feet Books, and though they do not have a lot of choices for Elementary, they have what looks like great programs for Middle and High School.

They did, of course, have an Elementary program for Early US History. My oldest is 7.  We don’t start our new school year until January.

Last year we used Pandia Press Ancient History I and loved it; we plan to return to their program when we start Medieval History in 1-2 years. They also have Early and Modern History curriculums and follow the Story of the World text for their level 1 programs.

Some other supplements we will be using:

App Review: Eggy Numbers to 100 for Ipad by Reading Eggs

We are big fans of Reading Eggs apps in this house.  I have reviewed a few, and we own several.  So I was very excited to be able to preview and review Eggy Numbers to 100 for IPad for it’s launch on Monday, November 25th.

‘Eggy Numbers to 100’ on iPad, teaches children aged 6-8 additional skills in counting, addition, multiples and estimation, for success in mathematics.

Featuring 6 highly motivational interactive games that progress through 2-3 difficulty levels, children can use the ‘tap’ and ‘touch and drag’ functions to arrange numbers, match number dots to dots and write numbers answers – keeping kids engaged and motivated to learn essential mathematic skills..

The app features colorful visuals, catchy music, fun sound effects, and exciting 15 Mashies characters to unlock and earn.

My 7yo son used this program, and he really enjoyed it.  There are several math games to choose from, they vary in skill and level.

Eggy count to 100_4

Space bugs was the only game he wasn’t able to do at this point, we have not really covered multiples yet.  The games could very well work for some children under age 6, as well…depending on their level.  For instance Dot2Dot -

Eggy count to 100_5

or Gridlock -

Eggy count to 100_2

Also Balloons, these three programs are mostly counting/number order recognition.  Other games include skills of factors, estimating, finding the difference,  Games become more difficult as you continue them.

The app is a great way to practice math skills in a fun way!  My son enjoyed receiving the prizes as well (eggs that you hatch to find funny animals inside).

It costs only $2.99 and can be bought on iTunes.

Disclaimer:  I received this app for FREE in order to use the product and post an honest review.
