By Bored I don’t mean you don’t like it, or it’s not working, I mean you are just BORED with the topics and ready to move on to the next thing. I also am not referring to the kids being bored (though some of these suggestions will work with that too, but at the same time, you might want to completely rethink your curriculum if it’s not workign for you kids).
I have a major case of short-timers syndrome, anyone else? I get to a point each school year, where I start to get bored with what we are doing, I start to plan for next year and then become very anxious to start the ‘new’ stuff…. anyone else?
How can you get through those slumps and actually FINISH a curriculum (yes this is a problem for me, if I let it get to me).
Here are a few suggestions for ways to MIX IT UP a bit and LIVIN’ IT UP!
1. Take a break! We homeschool year round, and well….sometimes it helps a lot to break up our regular routine and TAKE A BREAK! Take a vacation, do several field trips, mix up the MONOTONY… The learning can still continue, but in a different way! Try doing some unschooling style for a bit! What do they want to learn? Take a week or so and switch it up!
2. Put off planning for next year! I know this is HARD! I am always thinking 20 steps ahead, but the anticipation and excitement that comes with planning ahead generally kills what little (if any) excitement I have for the here and now! This time last year I was excited about THIS curriculum, right??? Let’s focus on here and now and get re-excited about what we are doing NOW!
3. Throw in a unit study, I like to stay on the same topic we are studyign (ie Middle Ages or Chemistry) but take a different tactic to learn it. Stay tuned later this week (Friday) when I share some of my favorite resources for easy unit studies!
4. Netflix! Have some on screen learning time…..it gives everyone a break (at least in this house, where TV watchign is pretty rare).
5. Games: Find fun games that go with your topics and have a game day, or they don’t have to go with your topics, just have a GAME DAY!
