Field Trip #53 Friday Blog Hop

Field Trip Friday!
Photobucket

A Blog Hop designed to share 'FIELD TRIP' related Blog Posts

(does not have to be a 'home school field trip', can be any trip to any place with your children!)

We went with our Homeschooling group to a local Fire Department, the local Elementary Kinder and PreK classes were there too.  It was great fun for the kids.  They of course talked about Fire Safety, calling 911, etc...  They showed us some cool Fire Fighter tricks, and all the gear and stuff they carry on the trucks.

    Little Pim Review and Giveaway

I have tried my fair share of Chinese videos for teaching children language. Both my husband and I have studied languages, my husband is tri-lingual, but most days I can hardly remember English. We wanted our kids to be exposed to languages from early on, and we picked Chinese as the focus because that is one of the languages my husband speaks. We have tried a variety of programs and I've always been interested in Little Pim.  Having already invested a small fortune in some disappointing products, I was hesitant to buy another language video.
Therefore, I was very excited for the opportunity to review this product. I watched the video with all 3 of my kids (1,3 & 6). It definitely did not hold my 6 year olds attention (it is advertised for ages 2-5). My other two enjoyed it. It falls along the same lines as other educational videos geared towards younger children. I know there can be some controversy about allowing younger children to watch tv, but I feel that in moderation, and as an activity done with your child, there ARE educational benefits.(  I speak as a mom, a professional and from experience). As far as language learning, I like that in addition to the cartoon Panda, Pim, real life people and objects are used. The Chinese characters for the words being introduced are shown on the screen with the objects, and the words are repeated in a variety of contexts.  The words are also used in a sentence. This is great for introducing the written language and reinforcing the words and concepts. Objects are all familiar objects to any child.  We watched Vol 1 DVD, "Eating and Drinking".  It introduced words for things like bowl, banana, water, etc..
Little Pim is available in a variety of languages and can even be purchased as digital download for on the go learning and fun.
Little Pim has been very kind by allowing me to give away one video to a viewer, in the language of their choice.  Please follow the Rafflecopter directions below for chances to win your very own Little Pim DVD!

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf by Louis Ehlert (Virtual Book Club)

We made leaf rubbings in fall colors....since we don't really have 'fall' here in Hawaii

We made bird treats with stale bread and peanut butter (and bird seed, of course)... similar to what was suggested at the end of the book.

And last week we took our field trip to the Botanical Gardens where we learned about a large variety of trees!
