Review: jollyliteracy.com–Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar (TOS Review) #hsreviews #literacy #reading #phonics #interactivelearning

jollyliteracy review

For this review we used Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar by jollyliteracy.com and just2ducks LLC.

We received the following items:

  • Jolly Phonics Teacher's Book in print letters
  • Jolly Phonics Student Book 1, 2 and 3
  • Jolly Grammar 1 Teacher's Book in print letters
  • Jolly Grammar 1 Student Book
  • Jolly Songs in print letters
  • We used mostly the Jolly Phonics Student Book 1, Jolly Songs, and the Jolly Phonics Teacher’s Book.  I used this program with my 5 year old/Kindergartener.

    jolly songs_zpsiyibgm0b

He really enjoyed the Phonics book, however, he found it difficult to print in lowercase letters, as his writing is not on par with those skills as of yet.  I would have liked to have seen the early books in capital letters, since those are easier letters to form.  Due to this issue, we did the program mostly verbally, using Can Do Cubes (review to follow).  The Jolly Songs were a fun little addition to help him remember the sounds the letters make.  All my children enjoyed listening to this CD in the car, and guessing which letters the songs went to.  Each Jolly Phonics page (in book 1) has a new letter sound, and review letter sounds.  It has a color picture and action to go with the letter sound to help remember it (this also corresponds with the song).  There are writing lines for the new letter and the review letters.  There are color pictures to pick the pictures that start with the sound of the letter, and there are 4 words that contain that letter sound.  The words have dots under each sound made by the letters, to guide in sounding out and blending the sounds.  By the end of the book your child is writing and recognizing words.

I have a hard time with phonics books that require writing to read, my boys have always been advanced readers but not as advanced in writing.  I have always improvised with programs, using stamps, magnets, etc… The Can Do Cubes were great in this aspect (more on them later).  I have found that capital letters were a lot easier for their early writing stages, but many early writing books start with lower case, as does this book.

    2016-07-25 10.42.12

I do LOVE that they did not introduce the letters in ABC order, but in sound frequency order, so that they are learning to sound out words by the third page.  In that same concept, letter s is the first letter, and was a VERY frustrating one for him to write, my 7 year old still struggles with S, so that was hard from the beginning.

    JP teacher book_zpsudbawy13

    student books_zpsdnh5ko2x

Jolly Phonics book 2 introduces capital letters, it is more word based, as opposed to just letter sounds and combinations. Book 3 introduces bigger words and more writing, including sentences.

    grammar 1 student_zpszwixdf1ngrammar 1 teacher book_zpsdavrvv0c

Jolly Grammar book 1 introduces a lot more dictation, focusing on spelling, as well as grammatical concepts, such as nouns, verbs and adjectives.

All the books include color pictures, to keep your child’s attention.  There are multiple activities for each concept to include all types of learners.

I really wanted my 7 year old to try this books, but alas he is stubborn and was not interested (this is a constant struggle).  I will definitely try again, however.

All in all, as far as a reading/phonics program goes, I think this is a solid program.  The writing aspect will vary from child to child.  If you have a child that is able to write at the same time they are ready to start reading, this is a perfect match!  If you have kids like mine, who are ahead in one area, and not the other… it makes a program like this one difficult to implement exactly as it was designed.

The multi-sensory aspects of this program are definitely a strong point!  I love that there are hand motions, and songs for each letter/letter combo.  The writing (if your child is able) is also a great way to absorb it.  I love that they are ‘reading’ by the 2nd page, which really helps build a child’s self esteem and confidence, which in turn encourages them to continue with the program and keep learning/reading!

Review: Talking Fingers, Inc. (TOS Review)

    Talking Fingers Review

For this review, my (almost) 7 year old and 5 year old both got to try out Read, Write & Type by Talking Fingers, Inc.  After watching my 7 year old for the first time play, my 5 year old was begging to play as well!

During the review period, both children used the program 3-5 times a week  They progressed to level 2 out of 10 levels.  The program works on Phonics, Reading and Spelling in a fun way.  They can print certificates as they complete levels through out the program, but my kids didn’t care so much about doing that.  They could be beneficial if you have to keep a portfolio for your homeschool, though.

    certificate_zpsjgabjv3t

The kids have to rescue the letters, and they are taken through exercises that require sound identification (beginning, middle and end of words), spelling, typing, and other related activities.

    fountain_zps63skpw9s

Both of my kids liked this program, they never complained about having to do it (which is quite common for my 7 year old to do, whether he likes something or not).  The lessons were fairly short, but sometimes they chose to continue on and do more than one lesson in a sitting.

It was definitely a hit with my kids, though my 5 year old had some frustration with the program, as it progressed, it became a little over his current level.  Obviously the lessons get progressively harder as they go on.

    space_challenge_zpscdq1ipal

As a parent, I loved that my kids loved the program.  I could see noticeable improvement in my children in phonics, reading and spelling after using the program.  I wish the parental page gave a little more details as to what they are or are not doing well in (more specific), it just gives a percentage score for each focus area.  I also had hoped that typing skills would have been more of an emphasis, but that’s not a deal breaker for me.  Just be aware, that this is NOT a typing program.  My kids did not learn how to type on here, they were hunting and poking to type their answers.  Though there is some typing instruction, that is definitely not what they were getting out of it.   It does help get them familiar with the keyboard though, which is a great thing.

    storyteller_zpsrt9zc39b

Another frustration for me was that the program did not work on Chrome, which is our preferred browser, I was able to use it on Microsoft Edge, with came with Windows 10, but I was not able to make a shortcut on the desktop to it through that browser, so log in was a bit more complicated for my younger children.  There were also a few computer glitches that seemed to work themselves out, though when I notified them, the help desk was very helpful and attentive.  However, they wanted to know what level or lesson we were on, and I could not figure out where to find that information, as it is not listed on the screen when they are playing.  As I stated though, the problems worked themselves out.

This program is recommended for ESL students, and though we are not ESL; I felt it was very beneficial for my children who are beginning readers/spellers. I think it was most ideal for my 7 year old, but my 5 year old definitely benefited and enjoyed it as well.

The recommended age is 6 to 9 years old.  My 9 year old tried the demo and it was definitely too easy for him (though he did enjoy it, he would have finished the whole program in the blink of an eye).  A 9 year old ESL child or lower level reader could definitely benefit from this program, older than 9 and they may find it to ‘young’ of a program for them.

Online Subscriptions for home use are for 5 year terms, and price varies from $35.00 to $100 based on the number of users.  There is a FREE demo to try out, I would recommend trying it to see if this is something that would work well for your child.

Review: The Phonetic Zoo by IEW (TOS Review)

    The Phonetic Zoo IEW Review

I was so excited to be a part of this review!  We have loved everything that has come our way from Institute for Excellence in Writing and Phonetic Zoo was no exception!  We received Phonetic Zoo Spelling Level A [Starter Set] to try for this review.

I used this product with my 9yo 4th grade son.  Spelling has always been a struggle (we have tried a few products), we did like what we had been using, but it still didn’t seem like it was sticking.  My son is a auditory and visual learner.  When I read about Phonetic Zoo I just KNEW that this was going to be the program that WORKED!   I was right!

The program starts out with you watching Spelling and the Brain by Andrew Pudewa.  He made reference to this talk in the writing curriculum seminar I reviewed previously; I had been wanting to watch it.  (I didn’t realize it’s available on YouTube!)  It is a MUST WATCH, particularly if you have a struggling speller! This is an amazing talk and it really helps you understand how the brain works and why spelling is such a struggle for some.

The two things that sold me on this program from the start were:

    1.  It’s an auditory program
    2.  It can be completed by a child independently

We got off to a bit of a rough start with the program, I discovered my CD player did not have a earphone jack (and it’s too old for blue tooth).  SO, I put the files into iTunes, he used the iPad to do his lessons.

He was not sold on this program at first.  I won’t lie, we had quite a bit of tears.  He did not like getting words wrong, and he definitely did NOT like repeating the same lessons after getting them wrong.  It REALLY stressed him out until about half way through the 2nd lesson (so about 9 times of using the program).  He now realizes that it WORKS!  He is so proud of himself after he gets 100% on his lesson.  I have tested him randomly on past words and he STILL REMEMBERS THEM!!

Below is lesson 2 (the hardest of the lessons so far), the left is attempt 2 and the right is his final attempt, #8.  You must receive 100% two times in a row before moving onto the next lesson. He was so proud when he finally got 100%!  He no longer stresses or gets upset about the lessons.  He understands they are working, and he understands the process.  It just too a little while.

    2015-10-20 20.47.002015-10-20 20.47.15

Part of the program is also putting together a ZOO (hence the name).  There are several options they show you for setting up your own, we opted for the lapbook because of the lack of wall space.  It’s quick and easy reference for him at any time.

    2015-10-20 20.51.402015-10-20 20.51.472015-10-20 20.51.582015-10-20 20.52.05

Another great thing I LOVE about IEW is that you also receive digital file copies of the hard copies your purchase.  This way you can have them when you are on the road (which homeschoolers sometimes are).

The Starter Set Level A package includes:

    • 5 audio CDs (includes MP3 downloads)
or MP3 downloads and no CDs
    • Lesson Cards with all three levels of spelling words and jingles
    • Personal Spelling Cards to keep track of your student’s typical misspellings
    • Zoo Cards that serve as a way to practice jingles or as rewards
    • Downloadable Phonetic Zoo Teacher’s Notes PDF file
    • Spelling and the Brain video seminar (link to streaming video)*

The beginning of each new lesson I do a small lesson, then my son is independent until the next lesson.  This works great for me, as he is 1 of 4 children.  It frees up time for me to help the other kids (which are younger) with their work.  We have slowly been working towards more independent work for him, as well; so, this was a great addition!

After I introduce the lesson to him, he listens to the words, spells them and then listens to the correct spellings.  He writes the ones he missed correctly and then redoes the lesson the following day the same way.

I made these spelling sheets, feel free to use them as well!

I really have enjoyed seeing how his attitude about this program has changed, how his confidence in spelling has grown and most of all how much his spelling has improved.

I highly recommend this program if you have a struggling speller!

IEW has such great products, we know use them for spelling, writing and grammar!  They are worth every penny!

The printed version of this program is $99, or the downloadable only version is $79.

There is a placement test to determine which level is best to start your child at.  This program is recommended starting at 3rd grade.  It’s listed for up to 8th grade, but could help struggling spellers of any age!

ClickNKids Review and CLICK N SPELL Giveaway (Rafflecopter Round up!)

    Rafflecopter Round Up Giveaway
Welcome to the Rafflcopter Round Up hosted by Simply Stacie and Makobi Scribe.
See all the other blogs that have linked up for the RAFFLECOPTER ROUND UP listed after the RAFFLECOPTER ENTRY FORM, all prizes are valued at $25 or MORE!

    MY PRIZE:

Click N Spell is one of 3 state of the art online learning products from ClickNKids.  Click N Spell, Click N Read Phonics and Looney Tunes Click N Read Phonics.  These programs are used world wide in over 100 countries both in HOME and in SCHOOL.

My son (5) loves to play on the computer and has been doing so since 2.5 years of age.  I love that I can allow him computer time as 'school' time and know that he is learning as he plays.  His favorite game of the 3 was most definitely the Looney Tunes Phonics!  The zany characters that we are all familiar with drew him in from the start.  Though Looney Tunes was his favorite, he also enjoyed playing the other two games, the intro at the start of each one had him laughing hysterically.  I am a firm believer that learning should be fun and to instill a love of learning at an early age, it needs to be!
I loved that the games were able to be adjusted to meet the level and needs of your child (you don't have to start at level one, you can skip ahead to lessons so that your child is challenged and not bored).  I also love the report that gets emailed to me when he finishes a lesson!  The only thing I wish the Spelling game had, is the ability to add your own spelling words.
Otherwise this is a great educational product for Pre-K through Elementary aged children!

ClickNKids has so kindly allowed me to give away one Click N Spell Lifetime Subscription valued at $49.95!

Entering a Giveaway with Rafflecopter is Easy! Just follow the instructions as listed! THEN...continue on the page for other giveaways in the RAFFLECOPTER ROUND UP!!
