I have not been to Mount Vernon since the 4th grade (we won’t say how long ago that actually was!). But I remember I loved it, even did an extra credit project about it, just because (I remember my teacher being surprised by that).
Anyhow It was a bit of a hike to get there, about 2hrs with traffic, but it was a fun trip. Unfortunately it was a bit cold, I’d like to go back on a nicer day. Since 5 and under are FREE, it only cost me 1 adult and 1 child ticket. So not too pricey. My mom lives not to far away, so she met us there too.
We didn’t get to see everything b/c well Z had an accident about an hour after we got there. A display board fell off the wall and hit him in the head and on the back of the foot. He doesn’t take pain to well, and though it wasn’t serious at all, you couldn’t tell by his reaction. Of course they employees were all super attentive, which actually made his upset a bit worse (he HATES being the center of attention and was even more embarrassed and upset by this). We were taken to first aid and some on site medics came, all while my son was completely uncooperative. It is laughable now, but was quit stressful at the time. Luckily he was fine, just a bit of a goose egg on his forehead and a bruise on his heal. He wanted to go home though (luckily that passed). They wrapped his ankle in ice and he refused the wheel chair or a ride in the stroller. But thank goodness it was nothing that a good old game of checkers with Grandma couldn’t take his mind off of!
After we finished walking through the museum the ice came off and he was fine! No harm, no foul! Never a dull moment! Though I seem to think it’s my mom that is the bad luck charm! Last first aid trip we made with one of the kids was with my mom too…hmmm!
After touring the mansion, we headed to the car for a picnic lunch (in the cold!) No food is allowed on the premises. The baby was exhausted by then and we ended up just heading home. It was about 230p. Good news was that we beat traffic headed home and got in about 4pm. Bad news is that C who had been filling out a treasure map didn’t get to finish or turn it in. So I hope to go back.
It was a great way to end our unit on George Washington!
Now that it’s warming up I have several more historic sites to catch up on and visit that we couldn’t during those studies because of the cold! There will be lots more to come as well, we start a unit on Lewis and Clark this week, followed by The Civil War! So much history here to see!
