My two youngest boys are starting to be on different learning levels (One is 5, the other is 3.5yo). I now have 6 boxes for each one, then there are 8 they share. These boxes are the same all week long. They do what they want, when they want. Some stuff may not get done at all (Though I try and encourage them to try different boxes).
