We are studying the 50 States this year. I decided to tackle our state first, and since our state was #50 to gain statehood, we will be going in backwards order of statehood.
As part of our state study we are participating in a post card exchange!
We are using the following resources: (some are linked specifically to Hawaii, but we will be using them for all the states!)
About Homeschooling Hawaii State Unit Study
State Coloring Pages from Crayola
State Nomenclature Cards from Montessori Materials
***Some state cards I made (this file contains HI, AK, ID, OK, AZ, NM, UT, UPDATED 9/5/2011 to also include WY, MT, WA, ND, SD, NE, CO, WV)
A copy of a postcard we sent
A labeled map of the US to color each state as we talk about it
The 50 States Volume 1-10 (Copy work and other activities)
I also blew up this picture of state license plates and printed them out

For dinner we made Adobo Chicken with this recipe from the About Homeschooling Hawaii State Unit Study. I threw it all into the crockpot, and it turned out good, but next time I think I’ll use A LOT less water.
and we placed the postcard on our US States Wall Map
My husband and I honeymooned on the Big Island (Hawaii) so I broke out our pictures for the kids to look at. They really enjoyed seeing them. Although we live on Oahu, Hawaii is a very different landscape. They were able to see pictures of the volcanoes there too.

I am really looking forward to visiting Hawaii one day - in the meantime good to learn more about it from your country studies.
