EQUINE 808 Horse Rescue

August 20th was International Homeless Animals’ Day, and No Ordinary Blog Hop is having a special giveaway this month in honor of it.  We were asked to write a post about a local animal shelter, and one random winner will have $50 sent to their shelter in their name, and receive a $10 GC to PETCO.

Now that’s not really why I’m writing this post, we had this field trip planned long before I even knew about the contest (or International Homeless Animals’ Day), but why not try to win $50 for this great shelter?!

Equine 808 Horse Rescue is the only horse rescue in Hawaii.  It is located in Kunia (their mailing address is P.O. Box 2817, Ewa Beach, HI  96706). 

There mission states:  “As horses are not indigenous to Hawaii and having a great love of horses, we feel it is our civic duty to provide a sanctuary for injured, abused, neglected, and unwanted horses by offering emergency relief, refuge, medical care, rehabilitation and adoption services and to provide education in the areas of proper horse ownership, responsibility, health and care to horse owners, horse lovers and provide a community connection to all.”

They work in conjunction with the Hawaii Humane Society.

They provide riding lessons, and educational programs to raise funds for the operation of their horse rescue farm.  We participated in their 2hr educational field trip program. 

The tour consisted of a petting zoo where they were also given food to feed the animals.

It was a great experience, the kids had a blast and were asleep shortly after we made it down the long dirt road.  I feel good knowing that the $30 I paid for us to take the tour is going to help the horses here on Hawaii.
