What my Child is Reading - June 6, 2011

What we are reading this week:

This book kicked off our Social Studies/Geography unit for Kindergarten.  It's a great book that explains in kid terms how we are a dot on a map.  From the world map, to a map of the layout of her house, it shows where we fit in. After reading we started with a world map, and found our place on it, all the way down to a map I printed of our street.

We have been reading a few pages from this book this week too!  This is a great book for learning about animals, the book is divided up into bite sizes pieces of information.  This month we are doing reptiles and amphibians (to go along with C's science class), so we are covering two pages at a time on those topics.  Each two page spread has several accompanying internet links, which we look up and further our exploration by watching videos, looking at pictures, or listening to animal sounds.  Lots of fun!

Unfortunately this is a discontinued Usborne Book, but I'm glad I snagged it before they stopped selling it.  You can find used copies though, and check your local library.  Similar to the "Me on the Map" book, this is beginning geography, focusing on what the child is familiar with...their very own street and neighborhood.

And we changed up from our original plan, after searching through my inventory of books, I found this one

I thought it would fit nicely with our 'theme' this month.  So I started reading it to him today.  It's sort of along the lines of Aesop's fable, where the stories have little lessons to go with them.  It's a book from New Zealand (where we lived for a few months in 2009) so he found that to be interesting (though he doesn't really remember living there), but ironically there are no snakes in NZ.
