Salt Melts Ice–Science Experiment

ice

A fun winter experiment….why do they put salt on the roads when it snows??

Freeze several small containers to make several ice blocks of the same size…ice cubes would work fine.

Dye salt with food coloring in several shaker containers (old spice jars).

Put the ice in a dish (don’t forget a control on the side; ice in a dish that you DO NOT put salt on).  Let the kids go to town sprinkling the colored salt on the ice.

Compare how quickly the salted ice melts compared to the non-salted ice.

We did this for a co-op science activity and the kids had a blast!

  1. Cool idea Jen! I'm so sick of being stuck inside, but this will at least give us something to do while we are cooped up. My kids will get a kick out of this.

  5. What a great experiment, and it goes really well with what we have been doing. We just did the experiment to pick up an ice cube with a piece of string using salt. This will be a perfect extension! Thanks for stopping by and sharing on Toddler Idea Tuesday. I highlighted and linked back to your post and have Pinned it to two of my boards.
I hope to see you back again, this week's linky is live.
    Have a great day!
