Getting Organized: Your Homeschool Bookshelf
I have struggled with this over the last two years, and I think I have finally found a system that will work for us! The hardest part was getting the kids (and the husband) to put the books back WHERE THEY GOT THEM FROM! So now everything is labeled, including the books, they can’t go wrong!
The books we will be using for the current year are kept in the school room, in the order by which I will use them. After use they will get their own baskets on the main shelf. Books for future use I have in the storage room (only because I have no more room on the main shelf).
Each label has a color coded sticker, and each book in the bin has the same sticker.
What I used:
and some small milk crates purchased at wal-mart for ~$1each
You can find the labels I made HERE, or make some of your own. I recommend you laminate them for durability. (it didn’t upload in tact, so you may have to cut and paste a bit, sorry).
I did not categorize picture books or board books…we just have WAY to many. Ideally, at some point, we will have a separate book shelf system for Homeschool books and regular ‘everyday’ story books.
And another cool thing I found to use the mini milk crates for:
ART SUPPLIES!! I put 4 recycled containers (plastic jars and cans) inside the crate, filled each with color pencils, markers, pencils, glue and then hung the scissors with rings that can open.
I hope this system works well for you.... looks like it should but well...kids and hubby's sometimes the best plans go ... the way of the dodo bird. :)

I did something similar with a cubicle type bookshelf. Each cube has a subject. Each subject has a colored sticker that goes on the book binding. Unfortunately, that book shelf got tons of stuff from home repair stacked in front of it! Things are being rearranged this year, but the stickers and books remain the same!
ReplyDeleteI need to update mine, I've added a lot more books and bins since this originally was written...need to add more stickers and tags!! :D Thanks for stopping by.
