ARTistic Pursuits– PreK- Review (TOS Review)

Photobucket Photobucket

Artistic Pursuits – The Curriculum for Creativity is an art curriculum which includes lessons for Pre-K (age3) through 12th grade.

We were fortunate to be able to review the Pre-K program, The Way They SEE It: A Book for Every Parent About the Art Children Make.  This curriculum in designed for ages 3-5 year olds.  It consists of:

26 Grown-Up Talks offer practical advice for parents
26 Picture Talks introduce works by the Masters, followed by art projects that help children gain skills in art
36 art projects that can be revisited repeatedly during the preschool years

I used this curriculum with my almost 4 year old; my 2 year old played along as well.

The Way They SEE It takes an approach similar to that of a Charlotte Mason artist study, which I really liked.  Each lesson shows a work of art, a short and simple dialogue is given to engage your child in a discussion about the work of art. On the following page an art project is introduced, along with some ADULT ONLY TEXT explaining the purpose and logic behind the project and/or skill being explored.

Here is a lesson example from the book (from the website)

Here are my children completing the above mentioned lesson

The way they SEE it costs $47.95, materials kits are also available for $69.00 plus shipping and handling.

However, all required materials are easily available at your local department store, such as Wal-Mart.  The curriculum also includes recipes for playdough and finger paint, so there is no need to purchase those items.

My children and I really enjoyed this curriculum, I like the presentation of the projects, and the simplicity of the lessons (from a parent perspective).  My children just loved doing the projects!  We plan to continue these art lessons, and will definitely consider this product for higher grades.
