Tap the Cat - Reading Eggs App Review

iPad Screenshot 1

Reading Eggs is a popular online program for helping children learn to read and to build upon those skills.  A subscription includes learning games for ages 3 to 13.  They also have several apps available, and Tap the Cat is one of their newest.

Tap the Cat has 9 games and 2 levels.  It is geared toward children ages 4-6. It is compatible with IPad  4.0 OS or higher and can be purchased for $2.99.

The games are:
Smart Quiz
Speak and Listen
Making Words
Draw and Paint
Time to Rhyme
Vocabulary
Sight Words
Letters
Writing

Three Accents are available for playing - Australia, United Kingdom and America.  Up to 4 players names can be added for personalized play.  Music can be turned on or off during play.

Each game cycle must be completed 3 times to receive a puzzle piece for that game, once all pieces have been acquired level 2 is unlocked.

My 6yo son played the games; he enjoyed them all, but said that the Draw and Paint was his favorite.  He had difficulty figuring out how to play 2 of the games, but was able to figure the others out without any instruction or guidance from me.

We have yet to make the investment for a Reading Eggs subscription, but we enjoy all of their apps.  For $2.99 this app is well worth the cost.  I also feel that children younger than 4 years of age could benefit from the app (depending on the child level and style of learning).

There seems to have been some past issues with sound, according to past reviews posted in the app store.  I did not experience any of these problems.  The only negative thing I have to say about the app, is that I do not care for the font in the writing game.  It uses D'Nealian Style; I would prefer a more standard print.  It would be nice if a choice was provided.

I recommend this app as a quality educational choice for a reasonable cost.

On sale now through Jan 13th for $1.99 (along with other Reading Egg Apps)

  1. We found a half-off deal for Reading Eggs and took the plunge. I am not usually one to purchase a membership like that, but I am honestly so very glad that I did!! Their 1 week trial didn't do it justice.
If you are ever considering it, keep your eyes peeled for the 50% discount!
