Getting out in Nature

So since we were talking about Crustaceans, we went on an Isopod hunt – Pill bugs or rolly polys (as they are more commonly called) are part of the crustacean family – did you know that?  It was news to me!

Because they are crustaceans, they breathe through gills, this is why you find them in damp places (like under rocks or plastic).  We were able to find a few, and conducted experiments by comparing the characteristics of insects, crustaceans and isopods to determine if they IN FACT belong to the crustacean group, and sure enough they do.  The only thing they have in common with insects is that they have 3 segmented bodies, everything else falls in line with crustaceans!

One great thing about homeschooling – I learn too!

  1. Pill Bugs, Rolly Pollies...Whatever you want to call them. Can you imagine growing up without the joy of locating them in the yard? Love this post. HOpe you'll consider adding it to Look What We Did. -Savannah www.lookwhatwedid-homeschool.blogspot.com
