Coffee Can Ice Cream

For months now I have had these two coffee cans that a friend saved for me (we don’t drink coffee), they even traveled across the United States and Atlantic Ocean from Maryland to Hawaii…
This last week was our ‘vacation week’ and we FINALLY got around to putting them to use!!  I had intended to use them for making ice cream for some time now, so here we go:
What you’ll need:
2 clean coffee cans (a small and a large) with lids
2 cups half and half
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
3 T Choc milk powder (like Nesquik)
Ice
Rock salt (though we couldn’t find any so we used coarse sea salt)
002
Put all the ingredients (minus ice and salt) into the smaller can. Put the lid on and secure with duct tape.
Put the small can inside the large can.
Surround with layers of ice and salt.
003
Secure the lid of the larger can on with duct tape, then take it outside to roll and kick around.  (you may want to wear mittens, we don’t have mittens here in Hawaii, so the kids wore socks!)

Ta-Da!  After about 30mins (you may need to add more ice and salt), you’ve got chocolate ice cream!  YUM!

ENJOY!!

After all was said and done, next time I need two sets (one each) OR we are going to use ziploc bags (2 freezer bags of different sizes) instead…the bickering was relentless during this project; BUT, the end product was SO YUM!

NOTE:  I forgot to mention to rinse off the small can before opening, to avoid a VERY SALTY flavor ;)

  1. That sounds like fun! But please do tell-what is half and half? Is it milk? We live in South Africa and we don't get that ;-) I'll have to wait till summer to do this one!
