Owl Pellets

I have mentioned Science Class before. It's really great! I wish I could afford to send him year round. The teacher, Mrs. Heather is really awesome! This week they dissected Owl Pellets. We got the email about it a few days before, so C and I talked about owls a bit, what an owl pellet was, what owls eat, etc.
For those that do not know what an owl pellet is...Let me first tell you what it is NOT...it is NOT poop. (I won't lie, that's what I thought it was at first).
Basically it's a 'hair ball'. When owls eat little rodents or little birds, they swallow them whole, but they are unable to digest the fur, feathers and bones. So they hack 'em back up in the form of a pellet.
Here are pics of the fun! It was determined that our owl had eaten a small mouse!

If you are interested in dissecting owl pellets, you can easily purchase your own. Here are a few places that sell them:

if you are adventurous you can even go and look for your own

Z is not really part of the class, but he has to do everything C does. Most days we will not stay, but we have stayed for the first 2 classes, Z hangs in pretty well. At home I have to make copies of his Science Homework so Z can do it too.

  1. Okay, so that's kinda gross, lol! But man, I'm sure Cole is learning a lot from it. I'm not sure if Sean would touch it if he knew what it was, lol.
